March 30, 2026

Our updated MK1 tier list ranks every character from S+ to D tier for March 2026. Whether you’re climbing the competitive ladder or exploring casual play, this guide breaks down which Mortal Kombat 1 fighters dominate the meta and which demand specific setups to excel. The meta has matured significantly since launch, with balance patches reshaping the competitive landscape and the Khaos Reigns DLC introducing powerful new options like Cyrax, Sektor, and Sindel. Whether you’re grinding ranked matches or studying competitive tournaments, this updated tier list reflects the current state of MK1 in 2026.

Tier lists are neither absolute nor permanent. Character viability depends on player skill, matchup knowledge, and playstyle compatibility. A lower-tier character in your hands might perform better than a top-tier character piloted by someone unfamiliar with them. That said, tier rankings identify which characters have inherent advantages and which require more precise execution to succeed. Use this tier list as a reference for competitive matchup learning and character selection, not as gospel truth determining matchups.

S+ Tier: The Absolute Best

Raiden sits atop the tier list with exceptional mobility and damage output. His combination of fast startup, superior combo routes, and dominant pressure makes him a tournament favorite. Johnny Cage remains a top-tier staple with his excellent mid-range normals and consistent combo extensions. Baraka dominates close-range combat with devastating throw combos and frame advantage sequences that create overwhelming offense. These three characters define the meta, appearing in most top tournament placements.

A Tier: Highly Viable

Cyrax combines zoning tools with grab combos that lead into huge damage routes. His versatility lets him function as both offensive and defensive player depending on matchup. Sindel provides excellent pressure and combo extensions with her proximity-based tools. Kitana offers technical players strong mid-range pressure and acceptable combo damage. These characters can absolutely win tournaments but require more technical execution than S+ tier options.

B Tier: Strong Viable Picks

Havik, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, and Kenshi represent solid mid-tier options capable of winning consistently in ranked play and smaller tournaments. They require more matchup knowledge and technical execution than higher tiers but reward dedicated players with viable paths to victory against any opponent. Character loyalty and practice can overcome their technical requirements.

C Tier and Below

Lower-tier characters aren’t unviable—skilled players with solid matchup knowledge can reach competitive ranks with any character. However, they face steeper learning curves and require exceptional fundamentals to overcome their mechanical disadvantages. New players should avoid these characters when learning, but experienced competitors may find success specializing in underutilized picks.

How to Use This Tier List

View this tier list as a general guide, not absolute law. Top-tier characters have mechanical advantages, but player skill ultimately determines match outcomes. If you love a lower-tier character’s design or playstyle, that enjoyment drives the practice necessary to master them. Conversely, if you’re just starting, choosing a top-tier character removes one complexity layer, letting you focus on fundamentals.
